Overrunning in a one-way bearing occurs when more than one motor is used to operate the similar machine along with the same shaft.

Backstopping

The external race of one-way sprag clutch bearing is fixed with the frame of a machine through arm of a torque. In this case, the internal race of one-way sprag bearing rotates in a free motion in the forward direction.

Indexing
This type of movement is used to create precision in the drive system of one-way bearing. A connection is made between the prime mover and the race. The reverse motion is then altered into indexing motion on the external race of the one-way bearing.

Describe the Operating Zone in One-Way Bearing?
Whenever a high torque is provided to the race of the one-way bearing, the sprag is moved with the engagement curve. This engagement curve produces an equal force effect between the mating and the torque. This contact between them is referred as the operating zone of the one-way bearing.
The angle made by the engagement curve is twisted between the internal and external hoop. The angle is constant in normal operating conditions.

What Is the Lubrication Method of One-Way Bearing?

If the lubrication is not given to one-way bearing and a lot of work is gained by it then it may result in wear.
Lubricant for the one-way bearing needs to be selected carefully because it determines the amount of friction produced by the sprag when comes in connection with the internal and external rings of the one-way bearing.
Lubricant supplied to the one-way bearing has a great effect on the transmission of torque. Lubrication provides a protective-film from wear.
In this case, a lubricant which has automatic transmission power is more reliable or a lithium-based grease or oil is applied.
Avoid supplying one-way bearing a lubricant which is a combination of high-pressure additives because it results in degradation and affects the working of sprag.
The one-way bearing can operate well at instantaneous temperature of 160⁰C and when a continuous temperature is applied, highest range is 120⁰C.
When the temperature given is suspected to increase the limit then cooling of a lubricant is necessary for best performance of a one-way bearing.
The lubricant added must be contaminants free and of good quality.
Method of Lubrication
When the machines are running at faster speed then the possibility of a greater friction is present. Method of forced oil lubrication is used in one-way bearing.
In forced oil lubrication, the forced oil is directed on the parts. Keep the level of oil above the middle of the one-way bearing during bath lubrication and keep the one-way bearing properly immersed in the lubricant.
In forced oil lubrication method, oil is directed from the internal side of ring to diminish the wear on the raceways area of the internal ring.
Oil intake of 2mm diameter is fixed on the internal raceways of hoop and is six in number. When continuous oil groove is not given then oil sump must be attached on the inner ring surface. In this way, amount of oil directed on the inner raceways of ring is ensured.

How to Mount One-Way Bearing?
Mounting of a one-way bearing must be careful to avoid any damage. One-way bearing is referred as a high-precision tool that must be free from foreign particles, there must be no contaminants marks on it. It should be corrosion-free.
Proper handling of a one-way bearing is essential as any mistake in it may cause damage or deformation of a cage. Mount the one-way bearing in such a way that engagement and direction of a drag must be in correct form.
Avoid forceful pressing of a one-way bearing. It causes damage and deformation of a cage, drag clips as well as the sprag.
Internal ring or a shaft must be rotated in a freewheel direction to support easy installing.
When mounting one-way bearing, outer ring must not twist and do not hammer the outer ring directly. When a press-fit is applied then jig must be placed in contact with the external ring sides carefully without any failure.

Some of the common series of one-way bearings are:
- CSK series
The operating temperature range for this series is -6⁰C-60⁰C.
- RCB and HFL series
The operating temperature for this series ranges from 90⁰C for a plastic ring and 120⁰C for a stainless steel ring. HFL series can bear radial load because of rolling bearing. Housing made of aluminum is best for HFL series.
- RC and HF series

What Is the Optimum Temperature for Working of One-Way Bearing?
-30⁰C to 120⁰C temperature is suitable for the energetic working of one-way bearing in normal conditions.
When the temperature of surrounding is increased to 70⁰C then the oil lubrication of one-way bearing becomes necessary to avoid any wear or friction.
Lubricant is also required above this temperature for the effective torque transmission otherwise rising temperature may cause damage or deformation of the sprags.

Sprag Clutch Bearing
Sprag clutch bearing is a type of one-way bearing which consist of two races such as internal race and external race and these races are similar to ball bearings. The cage of sprag clutch bearing is extended to a little extent and brake or stop mechanism is done in this area.
Sprag is attached with the retainer of a one-way bearing with a rod and the length of the internal race including the sprag is such that the sprag will only touch the internal race and do not put any force when placed in such position.
A spring is needed to rotate the sprag at some angle and rotate in a forward direction. Reverse direction of the inside race is prevented and the bearing eventually stops.

What Are the Solutions for Failure of One-Way Bearing?

Damage roller or spring of one-way bearing causes back-lash and the cure is to clean the one-way bearing properly for effective working and to remove such failure.
When the rollers of one-way bearing indulge in slipping, they must be replaced with some new bearing rollers.
Inspect the retainer fixation with the cage so that chattering failure must be removed.
Contamination or too much friction failure must be removed by placing new one-way bearing or changing the lubricant for energetic working.
